HostGator Review: What Do Reddit Users Think?

Considering HostGator for your next website but want to know what Reddit users think?

We spent several hours doing research to learn about the host’s quality, packages, and speed, both through the lens of Hostgator themselves and Reddit users’ feedback. Our experts also tested the popular web host with multiple websites to determine if it fits your needs.

While their overall reputation appears to be good, Reddit users have a lot to say about HostGator. We’ll dive into that below.

Short On Time? Top Takeaways

Don’t want to get into the details? Here’s our verdict:

  • We use HostGator ourselves and have been pleased with their hosting and service, maintaining over 99.9% uptime and fast speeds.
  • They are among the most affordable and well-staffed web hosts out there.
  • We’d be lying if we didn’t say that Reddit feedback on HostGator is extremely mixed and even toxic.
  • Interestingly, Reddit users are uniquely hateful toward HostGator — even more than fellow EIG hosting brands which use the exact same stack. This makes us pause to consider whether the criticism is warranted.
  • If you are looking for a basic host that is easy to set up and provides great bang for your buck, HostGator is a great choice.
  • If you’re looking for more than barebones Shared hosting, look elsewhere

Pros and Cons of HostGator, According to Reddit

Every web host claims they’re the best, but are they really?

We went through 200+ customer reviews and put HostGator’s shared, VPN, and WordPress packages to the test.

We also scoured Reddit for users’ reviews about HostGator.

This carefully compiled list of pros and cons judges HostGator’s quality on all important parameters and gives insights on what Reddit users think of HostGator.

✅ Pros: Why Reddit Users Like HostGator

  • Super affordable, lowest cost web host
  • 99.9% uptime guarantee
  • Excellent customer service (24/7/365)
  • 45-day money-back guarantee (best in industry)
  • Easy website builder and 1 free website migration

Below, we'll expand on each of these points so you'll have a deeper understanding of every benefit of HostGator that Reddit users like. We'll also share our favorite Reddit posts on these points below.

Affordable Pricing

HostGator's shared hosting plan starts as low as $2.75 per month for 36-month billing. They offer 60% off on all packages and have super flexible billing - go for monthly or yearly payout according to what suits your needs best.

At this price, HostGator more economical than the majority of other hosting providers we've reviewed. It just barely edges out A2 Hosting, too.

Here's a thread where an existing HostGator customer on Reddit asks if there are any cheaper options:

User on Reddit asking whether there are cheaper options than HostGator

Here's the top-rated response, which basically confirms that for very basic site needs, HostGator is already at the lowest pricing you can find.

User on Reddit responding that HostGator is already one of the cheapest options

Indeed, if you've got super-simple hosting needs and you're price-sensitive, HostGator should be a great option for you.

In another Reddit post, a user explains that they ran a SiteGround vs. HostGator test. The two sites were essentially on par:

Sceenshot of Reddit user explaining his Siteground vs. HostGator speed test

Since Siteground costs $6.99/month right now, you have to decide whether a small difference in speed is worth the extra ~$4.50 per month.

Solid Uptime and Customer Service

HostGator has robust servers that guarantee 99.9% uptime and minimal outages.

A little more about their uptime:

To show their customers they intend to keep this promise, they credit 1 month of free hosting to anyone who suffers uptime lower than 99.9% on a HostGator website. You can easily scan through every month's uptime percentage on your account's intuitive dashboard.

Some Reddit users also chimed in with positive comments about HostGator uptime. This user provides a glowing review of HostGator's 99.9% uptime guarantee, their 24/7 support, and more:

As for their customer service:

If there's anything a HostGator user will tell you, it is that their customer service is spectacular. The company offers 24/7/365 phone and ticket-based email help to all its customers. The staff has been well-informed and technically capable in all of our own dealings with them.

They built a separate portal to address frequently asked questions with more than 680 detailed tutorials and 500 video guides to walk you through troubleshooting different problems step-by-step. You can access this portal on your dashboard once you're logged in.

Long Money-Back Guarantee Period

Most web hosts have the standard 30-day return or don't let you pull out of the investment at all. It can sometimes take longer than that to gauge if the hosting is performing well enough for your site.

HostGator set the bar higher by offering a 45-day money-back guarantee  which you can claim by filling out a simple form on their website.

Free Migration and Easy Website Building

HostGator has an expert team that can help you migrate one of your websites from another host for free. If you’re new to setting up websites, it also has an intuitive drag-and-drop website builder and thousands of pre-made templates.

⛔ Cons: Why Reddit Users Dislike HostGator

  • Some Reddit users have a lot of hatred towards HostGator
  • Redditors hate that HostGator is an EIG company
  • HostGator doesn’t automatically apply PCI compliancy to sites (although it is available)
  • No free domain with purchase of hosting
  • Sites on Shared hosting may have service halted if traffic is too high

We'll further expand on these bullet points so you can understand why Reddit users dislike HostGator.

Tons of Venom for HostGator on Reddit

Reddit users are incredibly venomous toward HostGator - something we totally did not expect. While this isn't really a "con", it's still something we felt compelled to call out.

I mean, just look at what shows up when you search "HostGator Reddit":

Here are some choice posts from those threads:

Redditors complaining about HostGator

Ouch.

Redditors complaining about HostGator

Double ouch.

Interestingly, a HostGator representative does show up in the threads. So they obviously care that they're being trashed. It's only fair that we share what they said - which is basically that all of the venom is unfounded:

HostGator Employee rebuffing complaints by Redditors

EIG-Owned Web Host

We have previously covered Endurance International Group (EIG). Basically, they are a web hosting super-company that owns over 60 web hosts. They acquired HostGator in 2012.

By acquiring web hosting companies to subsume under their umbrella brand, they kill competition and enable themselves to provide ever-worsening service.

Since EIG acquired HostGator in July 2012, Redditors have completely soured on the brand and stated that speed and service has gotten worse. Whether you believe it is up to you.

No Default PCI Compliance

PCI is a standard list of requirements that ensures your website is safe for users who pay via credit cards. HostGator's servers are compatible with PCI but don't put it in motion automatically when you set up the website - you'll have to do it manually.

While HostGator does not automatically apply PCI requirements, it's still much better than Godaddy. We found one post on Reddit describing that Godaddy charges extra for PCI compliance, but HostGator configures servers as PCI compliant by default:

Screenshot of a user explaining Godaddy vs. Hostgator for PCI Compliance on Reddit

No Free Domain

While a free domain is industry standard for many web hosts now, HostGator hasn’t caught up in this area yet. Reddit users complain that HostGator doesn’t provide a free domain registration on sign-up. Another web host we rated highly, A2 Hosting, actually doesn't provide this benefit either.

Shared Hosting May Pause Your Site

We saw some comments about HostGator pausing hosting Shared plan sites that exceed a certain bandwidth threshold. This reminded us of our A2 Hosting vs. Siteground post where Reddit users confirmed SiteGround was "nuking" sites.

You can check out one super angry Reddit post on the topic below:

While there's evidence these are isolated cases and that shared hosting providers may generally be guilty of doing this, it's still important to call this out.

HostGator Hosting Performance: Reddit Users Weigh In

Your visitors are impatient, and most won't give a website more than 10 seconds to engage them. Have you ever bought a hosting plan and ended up with a dreadfully slow website? If yes, that’s poor performance -- and it can seriously affect on-site experience and conversions.

Performance determines how fast your site loads and how well it supports the site's elements like plugins. According to Reddit posts on r/WebHosting and r/SEO, performance is the first, most important thing you should look for in a web host.

Let's put HostGator's performance to the test and observe how well it holds up.

How Fast is HostGator: Speed Test

Speed across all devices is the paramount indicator of good performance for any website. Reddit users from r/SEO agree, stating that page speed is a key search ranking factor.

If your page and all its elements do not load under the 2-second threshold, bounce rates will shoot up and you’ll lose sales.

Google’s recent study concluded that sites with 1 to 5 second load time risk a 90% chance of their visitors bouncing, especially on mobile.

ThinkWithGoogle Page Load Time Study Results Showing How Important Load Speed Is

Web hosts with more processing power and better resources can load websites quicker.

We manage multiple websites on HostGator's Shared Hosting plan. This made it really easy for us to test their performance for you.

Here are the stats for the website we chose to test:

  • Health/Fitness content blog
  • Over 3000 keyword rankings
  • 300+ individual posts
  • Multiple ad calls (can be a drain on page speed)

As you can see, we chose to test HostGator using one of our websites that is quite large and demanding (though not as big as Reddit!). This site has over 300 posts, a demanding WordPress theme, and multiple calls for real-time ads which can slow sites down. Using this site provides a great "stress test" of HostGator's most basic hosting plan, which we then shared on Reddit.

First, we used GTmetrix's speed testing tool to analyze HostGator's speed and performance. The results were:

Our speed testing results on a HostGator-hosted website, showing above-average performance

Our site received an A on PageSpeed and a B+ on YSlow. The site took 5 seconds to load (better than the 8.5 second average), but keep in mind this is for every element on the page to load completely. The actual site content loaded under 2 seconds.

Your website will typically have its peak traffic hours in a real situation. To make it more realistic, we sent bot visitors to the site using LoadImpact and ran a speed test again.

The charts below show the relationship between HostGator site speed and the number of users. The goal of this test was to show how HostGator servers perform under stress, and whether site speed worsened.

Graph of our HostGator website test user count over timeGraph of our HostGator website response time test on Reddit

As you can see, we increased the total sessions from 0 to 500 over the course of 12 minutes. During that time, our site speed stayed mostly flat, with an average speed of 6.25 seconds. At about 8 seconds, site speed does increase a little bit, but not by much.

Despite the slight slowdown in speed once we got past 300 concurrent sessions, HostGator’s servers performed above-par by the standards of shared hosting.

You share the same server’s processing power and memory with other websites in a shared hosting plan. This affects performance significantly, at times by up to 60%.

If your website is likely to receive a lot of traffic, we recommend upgrading to a dedicated VPS server.

Besides that, HostGator did a great job with the website’s uptime during our tests. Our site continued to be available from various countries during our test:

HostGator Plans, Features, & Integrations

HostGator offers five kinds of hosting plans: Shared hosting, Cloud hosting, WordPress hosting, Dedicated servers, and Virtual Private Servers (VPS). You can check them all out here.

They differ in features, pricing, performance, and are well-suited to host different kinds of websites. But how do you know which one is right for you?

Most of Reddit's HostGator customers use Shared Hosting. If you're just a blogger or running a site with <10k users per month, it's very likely that Shared Hosting will be fine for you:

Comparison of HostGator's Shared Hosting Plans

Let’s break down each plan to determine the one that suits your needs the best, and see how it compares to other web hosts’ similar plan:

  • Shared Hosting: This plan is by far the most popular and affordable one HostGator offers. It's also the favorite HostGator plan among Redditors. It's tailored for smaller websites and assigns one server across multiple websites. Although not as sharp in performance as VPS, it's great for people just getting started with building websites. This plan makes sense for most people because new websites rarely bring in high traffic immediately- and there’s always the option to switch plans once your business grows. HostGator’s shared plans are spread across three tiers:
    • Hatchling Plan: With this starter plan, you can host one website with single-click WordPress install, free SSL and certificate and domain.
    • Baby Plan: The second tier plan supports unlimited websites with all of Hatchling plan’s features. You can add a private SSL to the package at checkout.
    • Business Plan: This shared plan is best suited to small businesses. It offers unlimited domains, free SSL and a dedicated IP that’s necessary for e-commerce websites. It also includes a range of free SEO tools to help you improve search engine visibility.
  • Cloud Hosting: Cloud pools resources from multiple servers to deliver consistently great performance, even during peak traffic hours when you roll out a discount. This plan is known for its fast load times and is perfect for websites that expect sudden traffic surges from time to time. HostGator's cloud hosting plans start at $4.5/ month with unlimited storage, email addresses and bandwidth.
  • WordPress Hosting: This is simply shared hosting tailor-made for WordPress users. If you prefer WP over other website builders and are planning to host your next site on it, this plan will secure you against WordPress-specific threats, run updates automatically and load the site up to 1.5 seconds faster than the regular shared plan.
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS): Reddit users in r/WebHosting state that VPS is right for websites with growing traffic and diverse resource requirements. It hosts your website on a cloud platform and lets you scale resources, set up custom applications and configurations that serve you the best. If you are expecting higher traffic, frequent surges and increasing complexity on the website, VPS will suit your needs better than shared.
  • Dedicated Server: Suited for large businesses and multi-function websites, this is a plan that appoints one physical server and all its resources to serve your, and no other, website. You have complete control over the server and can personalize to your needs. It’s the fastest, most scalable plan HostGator offers, starting at $89.98/ month. Reddit users confirm that if you've got a large site with high traffic demands, the cost is well worth it.

💻 Where can I find HostGator discussions on Reddit?

Reddit is one of the world's most popular websites, with over 330 million active users as of 2018. The website can be a bit challenging for new users to navigate. Reddit is sectioned into tons of discussion boards called "subreddits". These spaces cover all sorts of topics, with each subreddit dedicated to one specific topic.

Indeed, there are plenty of places to discuss web hosts like HostGator on Reddit. Below, we'll share the top places for discussions about web hosting, comparing web hosts like HostGator vs. SiteGround, and more.

HostGator Subreddits

  • r/WebHosting: The #1 place to discuss web hosting on Reddit. This is a super active subreddit with lots of dedicated, opinionated, and helpful members. The crew here is pretty technical.
  • r/HostGator: This is the dedicated place on Reddit to discuss HostGator. It isn’t a very active community. Not surprising given our notes about Reddit hate for the popular web host.
  • r/Entrepreneur: Here’s another place where Redditors discuss HostGator. This place usually has much less technical discussion about web hosting, as posts mostly come from newbies or people starting businesses.

💵 How much does HostGator cost?

There are many pricing plans/packages on HostGator's website. Here are the most notable options we want to call out:

  • ✔️ Shared Hosting Plans - as low as $2.75/mo -- Our #1 Pick
  • 🥉 VPS Hosting Plans - as low as $19.95/mo
  • 🥈 Reseller Hosting Plans - as low as $19.95/mo
  • 🏆 Dedicated Hosting Plans - as low as $89.98/mo (although this may seem like a lot of money, it's your best option if you have a site with a lot of traffic)

💸 Does HostGator offer free trials?

This web host does not offer new users free trials. Nevertheless, there's a great 45-day money-back guarantee which HostGator Reddit customers love.

This basically can be used as a free trial. If you purchase a long-term plan with HostGator, you can try the service out and cancel later on (within 45 days). Since you'll get a refund if you cancel within the 45 day grace period, this effectively works as a no-risk free trial.

📈 Is HostGator popular among Redditors?

The number of Reddit mentions about HostGator has stayed about stagnant in recent years.

Even though the web host has decreased a little bit from its 2015 levels, they are still among the most-mentioned web hosts on Reddit.

🌐 Can you host a site like Reddit using HostGator?

There is a range of web hosting types out there, from Shared hosting at the lowest end, to Dedicated hosting at the highest end.

You could definitely host a site of Reddit's size and traffic on HostGator, but you would need the highest-end Dedicated server they have.

❓What is Reddit?

Reddit is an online discussion board and social networking site. It is one of the world's fastest-growing sites and shows no signs of stopping.

How do people use the site? Users called Redditors post various things on the site, from pictures, to text, to videos, and much more. Reddit is split up into many sub-sites called "Subreddits". Each Subreddit is dedicated to a different topic, whether it's funny cat pictures, serious political discussions, or web hosting.

Each subreddit has user-appointed moderators who ensure the discussions are civil and posts are appropriate. Regular users can help moderators by "upvoting" or "downvoting" posts to signify whether it is high-quality content.

Please remember that when browsing Reddit, all posts are made by users, so you need to take everything you read with a grain of salt. Pay attention to post "scores", which indicate how many up- or down-votes a post got.

What's the Bottom Line?

We've done a ton of research in the course of writing this post. We looked over all of the best HostGator Reddit posts, read everything on HostGator's website, and looked for more resources too.

There's just an awful amount of venom toward HostGator on Reddit. You simply can't search for the web host on Reddit without something negative showing up. But is it at all warranted?

We understand the fury that Redditors have towards EIG and its hosting companies. But HostGator is just one of many EIG hosts, and other EIG hosts like Bluehost, iPage, etc. don't get nearly as much hate. And if they're all under the same umbrella brand now, they must be using the exact same stack.

Personally, we are customers of HostGator. Although Reviewddit is hosted on DigitalOcean, we run more than 10 other sites on a HostGator Shared plan. We have never had problems with HostGator or felt that it wasn't worth the bottom-barrel prices (sub-$3/month).

We haven't had any speed or uptime issues with our HostGator-hosted sites -- and even if we did, we could take advantage of their 45-day money back guarantee. If you don't mind the occasional upselling campaigns HostGator is quite infamous for, all of their packages provide great value for your money.

Most importantly, HostGator delivers excellent speed and uptime with a 1-month hosting credit if your website is down for more than 8 hours per year (which it never is, according to our tests).

We can't recommend HostGator if you're a large business with complex server needs. But if you're a Reddit user experimenting with building basic websites, we happily recommend HostGator.
